Hidden Dreams is part of the Southern Dreams Series HiddenDreams is a fictional love story set in the South. It is part of a three-story collection called Southern Dreams, a narrative of the dreams and struggles of the Bellamead family, who have lived on Bella Oak Plantation in South Carolina since 1844.
Hidden Dreams begins in the summer of 1960, a simpler time, blending over a hundred years of the past with the present, when Charlene Bellamead, also known as Charlie, is about to turn sixteen.
The tale unfolds as Charlie sits on the grand verandah of Bella Oak Plantation, the largest plantation in the county, surrounded by knotted moss-draped old live oak trees, along with paddle fans swishing overhead. You listen as Charlie, a spirited red-headed young girl, and her best friend Ramona Ledford are busy planning for the Fourth of July picnic, the best and largest picnic around the county since 1844, only missing its picnic during the Civil War, not even the Great Depression interfered with the celebration.
Throughout their lives, the girls have sought refuge by the spring-fed creek, Rock Creek, not far from the plantation home, where they’ve shared their deepest, hidden secrets. Charlie dreams of leaving the small town of Spring Hill to see the world, determined not to fall in love with a boy from their county. Ramona dreams of marrying the love of her life and living on a plantation in the county.
Jeffery Montgomery, who lives on the Montgomery plantation next to Bella Oak, dreams of marrying Charlie and blending the plantations, creating the largest plantation in South Carolina. Meanwhile, Jessie Ledford, Ramona’s older brother, is a young, struggling artist with hidden dreams of his own, capturing Charlie in his drawings.
A twist of fate intervenes, and the Fourth of July picnic forever changes their lives.
Their lives should have ended wonderfully, but as most love stories, life and fate take over with death and tragedy.
